Georgia Tech Football Alum King Awarded Carnegie Medal

Dec. 19, 2017

THE FLATS – Former Georgia Tech football student-athlete Noah King was awarded a Carnegie Medal for outstanding civilian heroism on Tuesday.

King, who played offensive line for the Yellow Jackets from 1996-99, was one of 20 Carnegie Medal recipients named on Tuesday. He received the honor in recognition of his extraordinary heroism on Oct. 25, 2016 in his hometown of Panama City, Fla.

On that date, King drove upon the scene of an accident involving Jonathon A. Chiodo, whose sport utility vehicle left the road, traveled down an embankment, struck a culvert and came to rest on its passenger side, its front end in flames.

King drove upon the scene, approached the driver’s side of the vehicle and tried three times to break the window with his forearm. With the fire continuing to grow in the engine compartment, he broke the window, extended his upper body into the opening, pulled Chiodo from the vehicle and dragged him to safety before flames completely engulfed the car.

King sustained lacerations to his arm and was treated at the scene.

The Carnegie Medal is given to those in the United States and Canada who risk their lives to an extraordinary degree while saving or attempting to save the lives of others. The award dates back to 1904.

King was a four-year letterwinner and two-year starter at guard and center for Georgia Tech from 1996-99. He started the final 17 games of his career, including two wins over Georgia and a 35-28 triumph over Notre Dame in the 1999 Gator Bowl, and helped lead the Yellow Jackets to a share of the 1998 Atlantic Coast Conference championship. In 1999, he was a key member of an offense that led the nation in total yards and ranked second nationally in scoring, en route to earning honorable-mention all-ACC recognition.

King, 40, majored in management at Georgia Tech. He resides in Panama City, where he is a financial advisor.
