TALLAHASSEE, Fla. – Makini Thompson hit .500 with a match-high 19 kills and Mira Djuric added 17 kills while hitting .448 to lead Florida State to a 3-1 (30-21, 32-30, 20-30, 30-24) victory over Georgia Tech Friday night at Tully Gymnasium. With the win, the Seminoles improved to 6-8, 3-3 in the ACC while the Yellow Jackets dropped to 9-6, 3-2 ACC.
Talisa Kellogg led the Yellow Jackets with 13 kills and added five digs and three block assists, while Callie Miller and Ulrike Stegemann added 12 and 11 kills, respectively.
Nikki Kaminskas paced Tech’s net defense, posting four block assists in addition to seven kills and four service aces, while libero Michelle Kandell ran the Jackets’ back row, notching 13 digs on the night.
The Seminoles won four of the first five points of the match while Tech struggled to get its offense going, dropping game one, 21-30. The `Noles hit .353, led by Mira Djuric, who hit .857 with six kills on seven attempts, and Makini Thompson, who posted five kills in the frame.
Trailing 30-29 in game two, the Seminoles received a kill from Brianna Barry before an attack error by Brittany Roderick gave Florida State the one-point lead. The `Noles then earned match point on a kill from Thompson, her ninth of the match, to take a 2-0 lead in the match.
The Jackets’ offense came alive in the third game, hitting at a .500 clip with 13 kills and just three errors on 20 attempts. Trailing by one early in the frame, the Yellow Jackets used a 6-0 run, which included kills by Nikki Kaminskas and Callie Miller as well as a pair of service aces by Kaminskas, to take control of the game. Talisa Kellogg posted four kills on six attempts and Callie Miller and Ulrike Stegemann added three kills apiece as Georgia Tech won, 30-20.
With game four tied 23-23, Florida State used a 6-0 run with Ashlee Moon serving and then held on for the 30-24 victory. The Seminoles hit .286 in the frame, which was capped on a kill by Brianna Barry, her 10th of the match.
The Yellow Jackets continue on to Miami and will face the Hurricanes Sunday at 12 noon at the Knights Sports Complex in Coral Gables, Fla. before returning to Atlanta. The match can be seen online via ACC Select (gatech.playonsports.tv) while live stats can be found at RamblinWreck.com.
