THE FLATS – Georgia Tech women’s tennis’ Victoria Flores was named the recipient of the Intercollegiate Tennis Association’s Southeast Regional Arthur Ashe Leadership & Sportsmanship award, the organization announced Monday. A leader on and off the court, Flores put together an impressive campaign this past season.
“I’m really proud and happy for Vicky to win this award because she’s contributed so much at Georgia Tech as a student-athlete, both with her team and in the campus community,” said Byers Women’s Tennis Head Coach Rodney Harmon. “Vicky took part in so many leadership opportunities in student government, as a team captain and within our athletics department. This is a great recognition for her.”
The recipient of the 2021 ITA Ann Lebedeff Leadership Award earlier this month, Flores capped the season being named an ITA All-American in both singles and doubles. Flores collected her first singles All-American title after going 19-7 overall and earning a top 16 seed into the NCAA Singles Championship. She posted a 13-4 mark from the No. 2 singles position, went 8-5 against ACC opponents and spent the entire dual season ranked in the top 25 nationally in ITA polls.
In doubles action, Flores partnered with Kenya Jones to hold the No. 1 spot and went 21-3 in dual play. The team finished the season ranked No. 2 in the final ITA national polls and earned an at-large bid to the NCAA Doubles Championship, earning the No. 3 overall seed.
Off the court, Flores left an impact in the Georgia Tech and Atlanta communities. On campus, she helped create the Racism and Prejudice Awareness group within the Student-Athlete Advisory Board, founded the Mental Health Committee and devoted her time to the EXCEL program where she mentored intellectually and developmentally challenged students. Flores served as a two-year team captain and member of SAAB while taking part in several community service projects.
