Falconi Named ACC Women's Tennis Player of the Week

Feb. 24, 2009

GREENSBORO, N.C. – Georgia Tech freshman Irina Falconi has been named Atlantic Coast Conference Women’s Tennis Player of the Week after upsetting the top-ranked player in the nation last weekend, announced the conference office Tuesday.

“This is a well deserved honor,” head coach Bryan Shelton said. “It is not easy to step on to the No. 1 court in front of a crowd and play so well. Irina handled the pressure very well. This will definitely be a confidence boost for her.”

Falconi, ranked 13th nationally, turned back Northwestern’s Maria Mosolova 6-3, 2-6, 6-4 last Sunday to earn her first league recognition this season. The win was Falconi’s second against a fellow top-20 player during the dual match season. The Jupiter, Fla., native is 2-0 playing for the Yellow Jackets at the No. 1 position.

The Yellow Jackets will return to action Wednesday when they open Atlantic Coast Conference play at No. 14 Clemson. The match is scheduled to begin at 2 p.m.
