THE FLATS – Following the opening weekend of her collegiate career, Georgia Tech volleyball freshman Mikaila Dowd was named the ACC co-Freshman of the Week as released by the league office on Monday afternoon.
Dowd made her collegiate debut in the season opener against Idaho State, putting up a double-double with a stunning 22 kills and 11 digs. Her 22 kills are the most in a single game by any active Georgia Tech player. Dowd also recorded a double-double against Winthrop with 13 kills and 14 digs.
The product of Metea Valley High School leads the team with 50 kills, averaging a team-leading 3.85 kills per set. She ranks eighth in the conference in kills, and second among freshmen. Her performance during the opening weekend also earned her a spot on the Hyatt Regency Invitational all-tournament team.
Dowd and the rest of the Yellow Jackets are back in action on Thursday, hosting the Hyatt Regency Tournament at O’Keefe Gymnasium. Tech opens the tournament against Alabama State at noon on Thursday, Aug. 30 before taking on Wofford at 7 p.m. Tech finishes out the tournament on Friday, Aug. 31 against South Alabama at noon and Tulane at 7 p.m.
