ATLANTA – Randy Goodenough posted a match-high 14 kills and the Wildcats hit .400 as a team as Arizona (6-2) stopped Georgia Tech (4-2), 3-0 (30-27, 30-13, 30-15), Saturday morning at O’Keefe Gym.
The loss is the Jackets’ first at home this season, and first of the 2007 Regency Suites/Georgia Tech Classic, while Arizona improved to 3-0 in tournament play.
Goodenough led three Wildcats in double figures in kills, as Brooke Buringrud and Tiffany Owens added 11 and 10 kills, respectively. Headlining the Arizona defense was Alanna Resch, who recorded 11 digs, and Paige Weber, who posted six total blocks.
Talisa Kellogg led the Jackets with 13 kills on a morning when Tech struggled offensively as a team, hitting just .070 against the Wildcats.
Arizona’s middle attack controlled the first game of the match as the Wildcats posted eight total blocks, including four by Tiffany Owens and three block assists by both Jacy Norton and Paige Webber. Randy Goodenough paced the Wildcats’ offense to the 30-27 win by hitting .538 with eight kills, while Tech hit just .159 as a team.
The Wildcats jumped out to an 11-3 lead in game two behind the offense of Brooke Buringrud, who hit .714 with five kills and no errors on seven attempts, and Norton, who had four kills and no errors on five attempts. Arizona then cruised to the 30-13 victory by hitting .486 in the frame while the Jackets managed just a .028 hitting clip.
Tech continued to struggle in the third and final game of the match, committing 11 attacking errors while giving up four service aces to the Wildcats. Arizona hit .370 in the frame and posted two more blocks to bring its total to 16 for the match.
Michelle Kandell led the Jackets’ defense for the sixth-straight match, posting a team-high 11 digs, while Nikki Kaminskas led Tech at the net with three block assists.
The Jackets will return to action Saturday night when they host the Kentucky Wildcats in the final match of the 2007 Regency Suites/Georgia Tech Classic at 8 p.m. at O’Keefe Gym.
