LAKE TAHOE, NEV. – Georgia Tech swimming and diving swarmed Lake Tahoe, Nevada for the Trans Tahoe Relay this summer, one of the most unique open water swimming events in the world that totals 11.5 miles.
The Yellow Jackets were represented by Toni M. and Richard L. Bergmark Swimming and Diving Head Coach Courtney Shealy Hart, as well as assistant coaches Angie Nicolletta and Michael Norment. Also joining were several alumni, including Dick Bergmark, Rod Correia and Kira de Bruyn.
“It was a great pleasure to interact with alumni around this unique event!” Hart said. “A big thank you to Dick Bergmark and Jing Li for coordinating this year’s groups. We are already looking forward to next year and hope that more alums will take part!”
Georgia Tech’s “GT S’Women” team led the pack, finishing first in their age group, first among all-female teams and 17th overall out of 168 teams with a time of 4 hours and 13 minutes. The team featured Jing Li, Megan Campbell, Vesna Stojanovska, Caroline (Jones) Johnson, Amanda Gannon and Elizabeth Stowe.
“Swimming in Lake Tahoe is always an incredible experience and I’m grateful that we’ve been able to bring our Georgia Tech alumni group together for the event over the past few years!” Li said. “Our ladies team from Georgia Tech has come together at the Trans-Tahoe Relay for the past several years as an unofficial mini reunion. It has been over 10 years since I got out from Tech and I’m thankful that the love of swimming still brings us all together! We love soaking up the sunshine on the lake and being able to race together as a team.”
Swimming in the Trans Tahoe Relay helps benefit many local organizations in the Lake Tahoe area, including those who maintain the waters and environmental well-being of the lake itself.
“Lake Tahoe was gorgeous with its pristine ocean-blue water,” Bergmark said. “What fun to experience it with nine Tech alumni swimmers, three of our current swim coaches and other supporters. It doesn’t get better than that!”
