Georgia Tech
Head Coach Brian Gregory
“I’m really pleased with our guys’ effort tonight. We came out with a sense of urgency which will always lead to good things. They’ve been shooting really well against some good opposition and for us to hold them to 25 percent shows how we are getting better defensively. Defensively, we kept them on top us the entire game and they really struggled to make shots.”
“Brandon had a great game. He’s got great speed and length. Solomon will take a long time to get there. He’s only been here a couple of days. I just wanted to get him in and get him to sweat in his uniform. He’s going to really help us out down the road, that’s the game plan.”
“We’re a physical team and we need to play that way. Some of the post play got rough, but that’s just because of us trying to play physical. When the game gets a little rough and ragged you need to tighten it up and we did that tonight.”
“I think Mfon is back now. I thought he played well tonight. We also had a chance to get a lot of guys in the game. So many times you don’t get to get guys minutes and we had the opportunity to do that tonight.”
“We’re at a point as a program where we have to play every possession. It doesn’t matter who we’re playing we have to play that way every time.”
Alabama State
Head Coach Lewis Jackson
Opening Statement:
“It’s a tough night. We knew we had a tall order coming in here, playing Georgia Tech here on their home court. At just about every position we’ve given up size. They are extremely big around the basket and we knew it was going to be a tall order, so we tried to make their guards take a last shot. We didn’t do a very good job of taking away the three-point shot in the first half. Once we decided to go man, they kind of exposed us around the basket in terms of getting offensive rebounds, posting up strong.”
On shooting just 25 percent from field-goal range…
“We couldn’t get anything to fall. I thought in the first half we probably took more shots than they did and we just couldn’t get anything to fall. We did have some open looks, but we couldn’t know those down. We took a lot of contested shots where their bigs around the basket and even with the guards that were closing in. When you’re giving up size and things like that you have to do the little things. You have to box out better, and knock down open shots, and we certainly have to get ourselves in position to take charges; something we didn’t do tonight.”
On the similarities between Florida and Georgia Tech…
“They’re both good ball clubs. Florida is one of the top 10 in the country. They move the ball well and crash the boards well. So does Tech. They both have really great teams and they’re very well coaches. That’s about all I can say about them because they are both very good ball clubs.”
On Robert Carter Jr. ….
“We knew it was going to be a tall order at just about every position. It didn’t help us to come in with 10 new ball players that are trying to learn my system and how hard it is to play on this level. Carter just so athletically crashed the boards – shooting from the outside, nice post moves. It was just a tough cover for us both in the man and zone.”
