THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech volleyball team served its way past Boston College, 3-0 (25-23, 25-19, 25-14), Friday night at O’Keefe Gymnasium. The Yellow Jackets (10-2, 2-0 ACC) are a perfect 6-0 at O’Keefe to start the season and hope to keep the hot streak alive Sunday against Maryland at 1 p.m.
Boston College (7-7, 1-1 ACC) hit at a .088 average and Tech was just slightly better with a .146 hitting clip. Courtney Felinski was a bright spot on the attacking force for Tech, connecting for eight kills on 15 swings (.333).
Freshman Katty Workman had a team-high 13 kills for Boston College and hit at a .152 percentage.
“I don’t think we played some of our best volleyball tonight, but more importantly we figured out a way to win and that’s what good teams do,” said head coach Tonya Johnson. “We struggled a little bit offensively and from a passing perspective. I didn’t think our defense was very good in the first set. We had to work our way into the match.”
Tech lead the Eagles 10-4 in the first set, but Boston College gradually chipped away and tied the set 17-17. All six tied scores and four lead changes in the first game occurred within the last 14 points with Tech coming out on top 25-23.
The Yellow Jackets had to play catch up in the second set as the Eagles got off to a 5-1 start.
“Boston College controlled the tempo from the very first point,” Johnson said. “I thought we kept the pressure on them from a serving standpoint, but I also thought that we answered the call half way through the second set and pretty much controlled the third set.”
Neither team hit above .050 in the second game. Service errors played a huge part in the match as the Eagles tallied five serving errors in both the first and second games, and totalled 12 errors in the match and nine receiving errors.
Tech trailed Boston College 14-11 before going on an 11-1 run to take a 22-15 lead. The Yellow Jackets found their rhythm behind the serving of Kaleigh Colson and Bailey Hunter, six Eagle attacking errors and a pair of kills by Felinski to claim game two, 25-19.
Felinski hit .500 (4k-1e-6ta) in the third set, while Colson and libero Nicki Meyer collected two servicing aces apiece to lead Tech past Boston College, 25-14.
