No. 11 Jackets Slug Fighting Irish

NOTRE DAME, Ind. — No. 11 Georgia Tech volleyball (10-2, 3-0 ACC) swept Notre Dame (5-8, 0-3 ACC) for its first conference road victory on Friday night in Purcell Pavilion. During the match, the Yellow Jackets only trailed three times on the way to their third consecutive ACC sweep (25-12, 25-23, 25-19) in as many contests and eighth sweep of the season.

The White and Gold controlled the match in every facet, dominating the stat columns in kills (55-31), assists (52-28), hitting percentage (.261-.110), digs (63-43) and blocks (8-6).

Senior outside hitter Julia Bergmann was at the forefront of the Jacket attack yet again, eclipsing 1,400 career kills while tallying her fourth double double on the year. Bergmann led the way with 19 kills and 12 digs, now owning 1,413 career kills.

Junior setter Bella D’Amico put in a career night of her own, setting up Tech’s offense on the way to a personal best 45 assists. Joining Bergmann with double digit kills were sophomore outside hitter Bianca Bertolino and junior outside hitter Tamara Otene with 10 kills apiece, with the former adding six digs while the latter earned her first double double of her Yellow Jacket career with 12 digs to boot at a .409 clip as well as three blocks. Graduate middle blocker Breland Morrissette anchored the defense with four blocks on top of seven kills at a .500 clip, while senior libero Paola Pimentel led the squad with 19 digs.

How it Happened

Georgia Tech burst out of the gates in the first set, taking eight of the first 10 points. The Yellow Jackets added their second five-point run of the set shortly after, extending what proved to be an insurmountable lead to 16-5. Tech held Notre Dame to single digits up to a 22-8 advantage, capping the set on a Bergmann kill for a 25-12 set one win.

The Jackets once again jumped in front in the second set, using back-to-back kills in sequence from Morrissette and Otene to take six points in seven chances, leading 14-8. Georgia Tech maintained a six-point advantage up to a 20-14 lead, but the Fighting Irish rallied with five straight points to draw within a point, trailing 20-19. The two sides traded blows for the next nine points, but the Yellow Jackets refrained from trailing as Bertolino ended the set with a kill, helping Tech avoid extra points for a 25-23 set two triumph.

Using a pair of early, three-point bursts, the White and Gold created initial separation for the third straight set to take a 9-5 lead. Notre Dame fought back once more to draw within a point, trailing 13-12, but Tech answered by claiming nine of the next 11 points for a comfortable, 22-14 advantage. A kill from the middle off the hand of senior middle blocker Erin Moss would seal the eventual 25-19 set three victory, resulting in Tech’s third straight sweep to open ACC play.
