THE FLATS – Georgia Tech’s new assistant athletic director for facilities, operations and events is John Portland, who has worked the past five years as an administrator in the Georgia State University athletics department.
In Portland’s last two years with the Panthers he served as senior associate athletic director for internal operations. From 2009 to 2012, Portland was an assistant and associate athletic director for facilities, grounds and operations at GSU.
While at Georgia State, Portland was responsible for the development, design and construction management of numerous capital projects approaching the $20 million mark. Among those projects were the GSU football practice facility, men’s and women’s basketball locker room projects, the sand volleyball complex and various renovations to the GSU Sports Arena.
Portland was a key member of GSU’s Master Planning Working Group, which created the Georgia State Athletics Master Plan. He collaborated with team members, including architects, university personnel, donors and athletic administrators to improve facilities for all 18 Panther varsity sports.
Prior to working at Georgia State, Portland served three years as assistant director of operations at the University of Central Florida. He also previously worked one year in the athletics department at Rollins College.
Portland obtained his undergraduate degree in business logistics from Penn State in 2001. He received his Masters from Penn State in 2004.
