Falconi Named Top Seed in NCAA Singles Draw

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech sophomore Irina Falconi was named the top seed for the 2010 NCAA Women’s Singles Championship draw, announced the NCAA women’s tennis subcommittee Thursday.

Falconi, who has been ranked No. 1 in the nation throughout the entire dual-match season, has recorded a 37-2 overall mark and has won a school-record 26 singles matches during the dual-match season. Named the Atlantic Coast Conference Player of the Year and MVP of the 2010 ACC Tournament, Falconi has won 20 straight singles matches, dating back to Feb. 13.

In doubles, Falconi will be joined by teammate Sasha Krupina after the duo earned an at-large bid into the field. The Yellow Jacket tandem ranks No. 23 in the latest Intercollegiate Tennis Association poll and has compiled a 17-6 record together in the dual-match season.

Singles and doubles competition will be conducted May 26-31 at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Georgia, following the conclusion of the team championship (May 20-25). The University of Georgia will serve as host.

The Yellow Jackets will open play in the 2010 NCAA Women’s Tennis Tournament next Friday, May 14 against Austin Peay at the Bill Moore Tennis Center. The match is slated to begin at 1 p.m., following another first round match between Mississippi and UC Irvine.
