Yellow Jackets Host Pair of Midweek Matchups

THE FLATS –  Georgia Tech softball (23-20, 6-12 ACC) will return home for its midweek slate, hosting Georgia State (16-27, 5-10 SBC) on Tuesday at 6 p.m. and Alabama State (23-18, 12-6 ACC) on Wednesday at 5 p.m., all at Mewborn Field. The Yellow Jackets enter the week on the heels of their third conference series victory, taking two of three on the road at Pitt (19-19, 3-11 ACC) over the weekend.

Storylines

  • Georgia Tech most recently clinched its third ACC series of the season, taking two of three games at Pitt. The White and Gold claimed the previous two conference series by the same margin over Virginia and Boston College.
  • The Yellow Jackets have now won six of their last eight games.
  • Coach Aileen Morales’ surpassed 150 wins as a head coach at Georgia Tech (152) and 250 victories in her career (265) this season, remaining the fourth-winningest coach in softball history on The Flats.
  • Senior catcher Emma Kauf laced two doubles over the series, moving up to a team-high 11 on the year and taking sole possession of third in program history in career doubles with 47 to date.
  • Georgia Tech has downed all four Sun Belt opponents faced this season, including Troy, Georgia State, Southern Miss and Georgia Southern.
  • The Yellow Jackets outmatched the Panthers [10-1 (5)] and the Eagles [11-3 (5)] for mercy-rule victories.
  • Tech also shut out both Troy (6-0) and Southern Miss (1-0) earlier this season.
  • The Yellow Jackets have reached double-digit triples on the season for the first time since 2014, improving 10 total on the year.
  • Senior hurler Blake Neleman has moved into second all-time in career strikeouts, also becoming the second Yellow Jacket ever to surpass 500 career strikeouts with 535 to date.
  • On top of marching through Tech’s record books in strikeouts, Neleman has picked up a pair of saves this season, moving up to six in her career as she’s now in an eight-way tie for third in program history in career saves.
  • Neleman owns six complete games this year and two shutouts this season.
  • On the season, Neleman (127) and fellow senior right hander Chandler Dennis (90) have combined for 217 strikeouts.
  • Defense has gone hand-in-hand with work from the circle this season as the Jackets are second in the ACC and 14th in the NCAA in fielding percentage (.979).
  • Amongst the conference this season, Neleman is third in the ACC in strikeouts as she’s surpassed the century mark with 127 punchouts.
  • Swatting a career-high third triple on the season against Georgia Southern, Kauf is currently fifth in the conference in triples per game.
  • Complementing her renowned defensive acumen, junior shortstop Jin Sileo is the most proficient in the league in sacrifice bunts, averaging 0.19 per contest.
  • After nearly every Yellow Jacket (nine of 10) picked up a hit in game one of the recent series against the Panthers, Tech earned its first extra-inning victory in game two, 13-11 (10).
  • The Yellow Jackets set season highs of 13 runs and four home runs in game two, also matching a season-best 13 hits to come away with with double-digit hits and nine or more runs in three straight games heading into the series finale.
  • The White and Gold now own double-digit hits in 11 games this season.
  • In the series-clinching win in game three, the shutout marked the sixth of the season for the Yellow Jackets.
  • Neleman (9-8) tossed her sixth complete game of the year and second shutout of the spring in the series finale, moving up to 10 shutouts, 33 complete games and 45 wins during her career donning the White and Gold in the appearance.
  • The Marietta, Ga., native allowed just six hits alongside three strikeouts in seven innings of work as she blanked Pitt.
  • With a plethora of web gems in the field through the series, sophomore center fielder Ella Edgmon highlighted the weekend by landing ninth on SportsCenter’s Top 10 with a diving grab in center field.
  • At the dish, Edgmon was also the most efficient Yellow Jacket batting .556 as she went 5-for-9 with a crucial two-RBI double that sparked a seven-run rally and what proved to be the game-winning solo shot in the top of the 10th in game two against the Panthers.
  • Multiple Jackets went yard through the weekend as junior right fielder Sara Beth Allen swatted her third home run in four games at the time in game two as she leads the team with 11 dingers this season and 12 in her career following a two-run shot.
  • Dobbins also came away with a pair of bombs as she drove in three total runs in game two on her second and third career homers.
  • On top of her web-gem worthy grabs, junior shortstop Jin Sileo blasted her first home run of the year and fifth of her career for what proved to be the first and only necessary run in the rubber match shutout.

Series Notes

  • Georgia Tech is more than doubling Georgia State in the all-time series, leading 53-25.
  • The Yellow Jackets have won the last six contests over the Panthers, most recently including an 10-1 mercy rule victory in five innings on the road earlier this season.
  • Tech owns three run-rule triumphs through five innings over that span, two of which came at home in back-to-back seasons in 2021 (8-0) and the most recent home matchup last season (9-1).
  • The White and Gold took control of the series from 2001-11, going 28-2 against the crosstown foe over a decade.
  • Tech is 26-9 at home, 24-14 on the road and 3-2 in neutral games in the series.
  • Georgia Tech’s matchup with Alabama State will be the first meeting of the two programs.
