THE FLATS – To help provide local students and their families with a spacious and safe setting for graduation exercises amidst Covid-19 safety protocols, Georgia Tech athletics recently hosted 13 commencement ceremonies for Spelman College and Atlantic Public Schools at Bobby Dodd Stadium.
The commencements included separate ceremonies for the Spelman College classes of 2020 and 2021, as well as 2021 graduations for the following Atlanta public high schools: B.E.S.T./CSK, Schools of Carver, Douglass, Grady, Jackson, KIPP Atlanta Collegiate, Mays, North Atlanta, South Atlanta, Therrell and Washington. The 13 ceremonies were held over five days, with Spelman’s taking place on May 16 and up to three APS commencements held daily from May 24-27.
Last summer’s installation of an artificial playing surface at Bobby Dodd Stadium allowed for Tech athletics to host a total of 17 graduations over the course of 21 days, including Georgia Tech’s own four commencement ceremonies on May 7-8.
One of the many reasons that Georgia Tech chose to return to artificial turf at Bobby Dodd Stadium was the opportunity to host more campus and community events at the facility. Prior to the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, Bobby Dodd Stadium was scheduled to host concerts by BTS and Guns N’ Roses last summer. Tech athletics plans to resume hosting outside events such as concerts at Bobby Dodd in the near future.
