BOSTON – The Georgia Tech track & field team received another winning performance from Bria Matthews on Saturday at the ACC Indoor Track & Field Championships inside the Reggie Lewis Center, as she was able to win the gold medal in the triple jump.
The men finished the ACC Championships in 13th place with 25 points points, while the women finished in 10th place with 34 points.
“It was a really good meet for the women,” head women’s coach Alan Drosky said. “Their effort was outstanding throughout the weekend, and it was great to see how engaged they were in the team competition. We put ourselves in position to get into the top ten and were able to finish the job today. More important, though, is the momentum that we will carry forward from here. Individually, a huge congrats to Bria for her triple jump title and for be named Women’s Field MVP of the championship meet. Also, Kenya Collins ran another big personal best in the hurdles, Carissa Tipler came through big on her last jump, and the 4x400m relays ran a seasonal best.”
Matthews had a triple jump of 13.08 and won gold a day after winning gold in the long jump. Matthews was awarded Women’s Field MVP by the league coaches for her efforts. Carissa Tipler also scored in the triple jump, finishing seventh with a leap of 12.18.
The Jackets also earned received points from Kenya Collins, who earned second-team All-ACC honors with a fifth-place finish in the 60m hurdles. Her time of 8.22 was a personal best. The 4×400 relay team of Domonique Hall, Marinice Bauman, Shannon Innis and Angelica Henderson finished eighth with a season-best time of 3:44.07.
On the men’s side, Spencer Allen won bronze and earned All-ACC honors in the 60m hurdles, finishing third with a time of 7.95.
“I was pleased with the fight in our team, but disappointed in our final team standing,” head men’s coach Grover Hinsdale said. “There were a handful of events where we did not do what we were capable of doing, and it cost us a few places in the team standings. We had four All-ACC performers and six guys with PRs, of which I am very proud. Now it’s time to start preparing for getting more guys on the podium at the ACC Outdoor Championships in May.”
Zachary Gunnz also earned points for the Jackets in two events on Saturday, finishing eighth in the 60m and 200m. Avery Bartlett earned second-team All-ACC honors with a sixth-place finish and a time of 1:49.25 in the 800m. Andres Littig finished seventh in the event with a time of 1:49.39.
Ryan Thomas (fourth in the triple jump, 15.38) and Nikita Kirillov (sixth in the pole vault, 5.12) also earned second-team All-ACC honors.
