THREE JACKETS PLAY THE WEEKEND AT AMERICAN EXPRESS

Stewart Cink, Anders Albertson and Paul Haley II all advanced to weekend rounds at The American Express last weekend in LaQuinta, Calif. Cink tied for 41st with a 15-under-par score of 274, while Albertson tied for 62nd at 12-under-par 276, and Haley finished 69th at 3-under-par 285.

Cink (No. 127) and Albertson (No. 197) made modest gains in the FedEx Cup standings, while Haley slipped to No. 111.

After two missed cuts and a withdrawal, Alberton has made the cut in his last two events. Cink, who is approaching age 50 but is committed to a successful season on the PGA Tour, has made five cuts in his seven events of 2022-23. Haley has made five cuts in eight events.

Chesson Hadley and Richy Werenski both missed the cut at The American Express, while Vincent Whaley remains sidelined with a wrist injury.

Matt Kuchar, who did not play at LaQuinta, remains the Tech player ranked highest in the FedEx Cup list at No. 64 as the Tour moves to San Diego this weekend for the Farmers Insurance Open, where only Albertson and Werenski are scheduled to play.

KINGS OF HARBOUR TOWN TURNING 50 THIS YEAR

Several players who won on the PGA TOUR will turn 50 in 2023. Two of the most notable are Stewart Cink, whose resume includes eight wins (one major), and Boo Weekley, who won three times.

Both have expressed interest in joining PGA TOUR Champions. Cink remains active on the PGA TOUR and has won as recently as 2021 at the RBC Heritage at Harbour Town Golf Links. Coincidentally, two of his other wins came at the same event, as did two of Weekley’s three wins.

Cink should be in fine form when he’s ready to step out after he turns 50 on May 21. But how soon that will be is anybody’s guess. He’s still playing a loaded schedule on the PGA TOUR and has made three cuts in five events this season.

“Certainly, I’ve thought about the fact that I’m about to turn 50, but I have not at all thought about turning 50 and joining PGA TOUR Champions,” Cink said at the PNC Championship in December. “That’s by design. I feel like if I put my eye there before I turn 50, it would become too easy to lose that focus on the PGA TOUR.”
