Georgia Tech Hosts I-75 Tournament

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech softball (10-2) will serve as one of three host sites for the I-75 Tournament, welcoming Penn State, ETSU and Jacksonville State for six games Friday through Sunday at Mewborn Field. As part of the tournament, six more games will be played at Kennesaw State and another four games will be hosted by Georgia State.

There will be a Georgia Tech t-shirt giveaway for the first game of the tournament as the Jackets take on the Nittany Lions on Friday at 2 p.m.

Storylines

  • Georgia Tech has outscored its opponents 73-32 to date.
  • The Yellow Jackets have won three straight games, downing Mississippi State to wrap up last weekend and taking two more midweek victories over Furman and Georgia State.
  • Tech is off to a 10-2 start, its best since opening the 2014 season 11-2.
  • Junior Blake Neleman tossed a career-high 13 strikeouts in the season opener against Saint Joseph’s, fanning 12 of the 13 batters on the way to a complete game win. Neleman nearly matched that total against Mississippi State with 12 punchouts in another complete game win over Mississippi State. She now owns six complete game wins in seven appearances on the year.
  • Graduate slugger Tricia Awald has gotten a hit in every game this season.
  • The Jackets are currently top 10 in the country and among the league’s best in multiple categories – eighth in the nation and leading the conference in doubles on the season (22), 16th in the land and third in the league in on-base percentage (0.443) and leading the NCAA in walks (63).
  • Tech stacks up among the nation’s best defensively as well, placing 12th in the country and atop the conference in fielding percentage (.987).
  • The White and Gold have been proficient at the plate overall, ranking fifth in the ACC in batting average (.322).
  • Awald is among the nation’s best at the dish, currently third in the NCAA and atop the ACC in hits (19), fourth in the country and leading the conference in on-base percentage (.688), third in the land and second amongst conference foes in doubles (7), eighth in the nation and leading the league in batting average (.593) and 11th in the NCAA and second in the ACC in total bases (32).
  • To date, Neleman is second in the country and atop the conference in strikeouts (61). Her six wins on the year are also tied for the nation’s lead.
  • Freshman Emma Minghini has gotten off to a hot start in her first collegiate season, ranking 15th in the nation and second in the league in RBI (14).

Series Notes

  • Georgia Tech trails Penn State 5-3 in the all-time series. The most recent win for the Yellow Jackets over the Nittany Lions cam in the form of a 3-2 victory to open a doubleheader in 2020. The White and Gold own two home wins over Penn State.
  • Tech has won both of its previous meetings with ETSU. The Jackets mercy ruled the Buccaneers through five innings in both games played in the history of the two programs, once at a neutral site in 2006 and again at home in 2014.
  • The White and Gold lead the all-time series over Jacksonville State, 9-5. The Jackets won the first seven straight contests between the two and most recently downed the Gamecocks on the road in 2015. Tech has won three home matchups through the series.

2022 SOFTBALL TICKETS

2022 tickets for all home contests are on sale and can be purchased HERE. Tickets purchased during the I-75 Tournament will be valid for both games of each doubleheader of the day. A Ballpark Pass is also available HERE for all-day access to both softball and baseball for a day during the weekend.

Youth/Senior GA Bench: $2

Group (10+) GA Bench: $2

Standing room only tickets will be sold for $2 each if all other sections are sold out. Georgia Tech students and faculty/staff can receive free admission to regular season home games while seats remain available by showing a valid BuzzCard at the entrance.
