Geico Alumnus of the Game: Mackel Harris

Oct. 11, 2014

Mackel Harris, a four-year standout for the Georgia Tech Yellow Jackets from 1976-79, is the Geico Alumnus of the Game for Saturday’s Hall of Fame and Heroes Day game vs. Duke. The Americus, Ga., native was part of Tech’s dynamic defensive duo with All-American Lucius Sanford in 1976.

He was a three-year starter on Tech’s defense and helped lead GT to the 1978 Peach Bowl vs. Purdue. As a freshman in 1976, he tallied 109 tackles and was the recipient of the Clint Castleberry Award, which was given to Tech’s Rookie of the Year.

In 1977, he led the team with 107 tackles, 4 tackles-for-loss and one fumble recovery. He finished second on the team in tackles in both 1978 and 1979, tallying a team-high 13 tackles for loss as a senior. His 390 tackles ranks 10th on GT’s career list for tackles by a linebacker. His 14 solo tackles vs. Cal in 1978 are the fourth-most all-time by a Yellow Jacket.

He spent a short time in the NFL with the Denver Broncos and the Dallas Cowboys. He began his career in banking and has spent the last 30 years at the Life University School of Chiropractic Medicine.
