ATLANTA – The ninth-ranked Georgia Tech women’s tennis team will serve as a host team for first- and second-round action in the 2009 NCAA Women’s Tennis Championships after receiving an at-large bid, the NCAA announced Tuesday afternoon.
The Yellow Jackets (16-7), the No. 9 national seed, will face Jackson State (13-7) at 1 p.m. Friday, May 8, while Mississippi (14-9) meets Denver (16-5) at 10 a.m. in the first round at the Bill Moore Tennis Center. The winners of Friday’s matches will square off at 1 p.m. Saturday in the second round for a slot in the NCAA Round of 16, which will be held at the George P. Mitchell Tennis Center on the Texas A&M campus in College Station, Texas May 14-19. At the conclusion of the team championships, singles and doubles championships will also be held at Texas A&M May 20-25.
“It is an honor to be able to host this event and not travel across the country,” head coach Bryan Shelton said. “It is something we have grown accustomed too the last couple years. The hard work we have put in has allowed us be in a position to host this regional.
“I am sure all of these teams have been very successful this year. We don’t know much about Jackson State but we will prepare very well for them. Ole’ Miss has been very successful in their conference and had finished strong. Denver has also been a quality program.”
