THE FLATS – Georgia Tech senior running back David Sims, who has rushed for more than 1,300 career yards, was named Thursday to the preseason watch list for the Doak Walker Award.
The Doak Walker Award is presented annually to the nation’s top college running back.
Sims enters his final season with 1,368 career rushing yards, which ranks 29th on Georgia Tech’s all-time rushing list. Only three active players in the ACC have rushed for more yards and his 86 career points scored rank fourth among active ACC running backs.
Last season Sims combined with fellow B-back Zach Laskey to rush for more than 1,300 yards. Sims rushed for 612 yards and four touchdowns on 135 carries in 2012. He closed the ’12 season by rushing for 99 yards in Tech’s Hyundai Sun Bowl victory over USC.
Sims is one of four Atlantic Coast Conference running backs on the list, joining Miami’s Duke Johnson, Boston College’s Andre Williams and Syracuse’s Jerome Smith.
Sims is the sixth different Yellow Jacket to be named to a preseason watch list for a national individual award.
