Women’s Tennis Opens Falls Season This Weekend

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech women’s tennis will get the fall season underway this weekend taking part in the 34th Annual Debbie Southern Furman Fall Classic. The three-day tournament, which runs Sept. 17-19, will take place at the Mickel Tennis Center on the campus of Furman University.

The tournament will feature 13 teams in a flighted competition (no team winner, just individual flight champions for singles and doubles).

Joining Georgia Tech in the fall tournament are Clemson, Duke, Florida State, Mississippi State, North Carolina, Ohio State, South Carolina, Tennessee, Texas, Vanderbilt, Wake Forest and host Furman. Competition will begin at 8:30 a.m. on Friday with the first round of singles play followed by doubles (six game sets). Action will continue Saturday with one round of doubles followed by one round of singles and Sunday will host the final round of singles play.

Eight Yellow Jackets will compete in singles and Tech will feature four doubles teams.

The Yellow Jackets will be represented by returners Monika Dedaj (Pula, Croatia), Rosie Garcia Gross (New York, N.Y.), Ava Hrastar (Duluth, Ga.), Mahak Jain (Mumbai, India), Carol Lee (Saipan, Northern Mariana Islands), Ruth Marsh (Atlanta, Ga.) and Sophia Sassoli (Gladwyne, Pa.). Donning the white and gold for the first time this weekend will be newcomers Kylie Bilchev (Ipswich, England) and Kate Sharabura (Atlanta, Ga.).
