Women’s Tennis Advances in Qualifying Action

LAKE NONA, Fla. – Gia Cohen, Rosie Garcia Gross and Kate Sharabura all secured spots in the ITA Regionals singles main draw after pocketing qualifying victories on Thursday. The ITA Southeast Regionals got underway at the USTA National Campus on Thursday with qualifiers seeking eight spots in the singles main draw.

All three Yellow Jackets earned first round byes in the qualifying draw and opened play in the afternoon. Garcia Gross and Sharabura each captured straight-set victories over their opponents. Facing Anique Kattenberg (UCF), Garcia Gross dropped only three games for a 6-2, 6-1 triumph, while Sharabura cruised to a 6-3, 6-1 decision over Miami’s Nada Dimovska. Wrapping up qualifying action for the Jackets, Cohen won a hard-fought match against Mia Nirundorn of Georgia. Cohen took the first set, 6-2, before the Bulldog evened the match with a 6-4 second set, forcing a 10-point tiebreak. Cohen took the match, winning the tiebreak, 10-7.

Cohen, Garcia Gross and Sharabura join fellow Yellow Jackets Kylie Bilchev, No. 92 Carol Lee, No. 65 Ava Hrastar, Mahak Jain and Monika Dedaj in the singles main draw, which begins Friday.

Georgia Tech will also have three doubles teams competing in the doubles main draw – Bilchev/Hrastar, Sharabura/Lee and Cohen/Garcia Gross.
