THE FLATS – Coming off a pair of decisive Atlantic Coast Conference wins, Georgia Tech women’s basketball jumped to No. 14 in the Associated Press poll released on Monday. The ranking marked the highest AP ranking in Georgia Tech women’s basketball history.
Tech (15-4, 6-2 ACC) collected wins at Syracuse and No. 20 North Carolina last week to move up four spots in the AP poll. Four Yellow Jackets averaged double-figure scoring numbers in the two-game stretch, paced by Nerea Hermosa, who scored a career-high 21 points at Syracuse. Against UNC on Sunday, Tech distributed its offense and was led by Digna Strautmane, who finished with a double-double behind 14 points and 11 rebounds. Lotta-Maj Lahtinen added 12 points to the scoreboard against the Tar Heels to hit the 1,000-career point mark in her collegiate career.
Tech held North Carolina to just 38 points on Sunday, marking the fifth time this season the Jackets have held an opponent to 40 points or less. The win against North Carolina also marked the third over a top-25 opponent this season.
The Jackets continue to lead the nation in scoring defense, and lead the ACC in field goal percentage defense and rebounding defense.
The ACC boasts five teams ranked in the nation’s top 25: No. 3 NC State, No. 5 Louisville, No. 14 Georgia Tech, No. 20 Notre Dame and No. 21 Duke.
The Jackets have taken 10 of its last 12 outings and return to the hardwood on Thursday, Jan. 27, welcoming Boston College to McCamish Pavilion. Tip is slated for 7 p.m. on ACC Network Extra.
