THE FLATS – No. 16 Georgia Tech women’s basketball was never able to get on track offensively in a 51-39 loss to Miami (Fla.) on Sunday afternoon at McCamish Pavilion.
Georgia Tech (19-8, 10-6 ACC) shot just 28.6% from the field (14-of-49) for the game, including 18.8% from 3-point range (3-of-16). The Yellow Jackets also committed 22 turnovers in the outing.
Tech was especially cold at the beginning of the game, as it managed only four points in the first 17-and-a-half minutes of the contest. Defense kept the Jackets within striking distance, as they only trailed by 12 points at halftime (24-12) despite making just 3-of-23 field goals (13%) and zero 3-pointers (0-of-6) in the opening half.
Although the Yellow Jackets shot 42.3% from the field in the second half (11-of-26), they couldn’t pull any closer than within 10 points after the break.
Eylia Love led Tech offensively with a game-high-tying 12 points.
Miami (16-10, 9-7 ACC) has now held Georgia Tech to its two lowest scoring outputs of the season – 45 points in a 46-45 defeat in Coral Gables, Fla. on Jan. 16 and 39 on Sunday. The Hurricanes were led offensively by Karla Erjavec and Maeva Djaldi-Tabdi, who scored 12 and 10 points, respectively, in Miami’s fourth-straight win.
Prior to the Yellow Jackets’ final home game of the regular season, Tech honored seniors Sarah Bates and Lotta-Maj Lahtinen and fifth-year senior Digna Strautmane as part of Senior Day festivities. Fifth-year senior Lorela Cubaj, who was honored on Senior Day last season but chose to return for her extra season of eligibility granted due to the Covid-19 pandemic, addressed the McCamish Pavilion crowd following the game.
Georgia Tech closes the regular season with a pair of road games this week – Thursday at Florida State (6 p.m. – TV: ACC Network) and Sunday at Wake Forest (1 p.m. – TV: ACC Network Extra).
