THE FLATS – Georgia Tech volleyball gave fans a first look at the 2018 team on Sunday afternoon at the annual Gold/White Scrimmage at O’Keefe Gymnasium.

The Yellow Jackets played a full five sets, with student-athletes switching teams each set to try out different lineups and combinations.

Head coach Michelle Collier says:
“Overall I felt like it was a really great day for us. It was great to be able to see different lineups, put on the uniforms and throw them out there in that environment. I think one of the biggest things about this group is just their willingness to work hard.”

The white team took the first set at 25-16. After taking an early lead at 10-7, white held onto its lead, taking set point at 24-16. Freshman outside hitter Mariana Brambilla drove home a kill to give white the first set victory.

The second set was a closer affair. After gold took a small lead at 10-8, white tied it up at 10-10. The two teams traded points to a tie at 20-20. Another kill from Brambilla put white ahead at 21-20. The white team kept its lead, not allowing another point. A service ace from freshman libero Maddie Tippett gave white set point and an attack error by the gold team sealed the set for white at 25-20.

White took its third straight win in set three. White took a large lead at 14-9 off a kill from freshman middle blocker Kayla Kaiser. Gold brought it back within three at 21-18 but white held on for the win, taking the set at 25-19 off a kill from Brambilla.

Gold took the fourth set at 25-20. The gold team took an early lead at 10-5 but five straight points from the white team tied the set at 10-10. Gold jumped back out, taking five in a row to lead 16-10. The white team would get as close as two at 22-20 but a kill from freshman middle blocker Breland Morrissette got the gold team back on track. Sophomore right side Grace Rigsbee sealed the fourth set for gold.

The final set also belonged to the gold team. Taking the lead at 4-2, gold led the whole way. At 14-10, Brambilla drove home a kill, her third set winning kill of the match, to pocket the fifth set for gold.

The Jackets are back in action on Saturday, Aug. 18 for an exhibition match against Auburn at 4 p.m. in O’Keefe Gymnasium.
