THE FLATS – The Georgia Tech volleyball team (2-0) recorded its second sweep in as many matches with a 3-0 (25-14, 25-21, 25-20) victory Saturday against Gardner-Webb (0-2) at the Gamecock Invitational in Columbia, S.C.
Sophomore Teegan Van Gunst led the Jackets with 10 kills, while senior Ashtaan Horton and sophomore Annika Van Gunst added seven kills each. Horton hit .462 in the match as the Jackets out-hit the Runnin’ Bulldogs .315 to .168.
Freshman Annika Olsen tallied 16 digs to anchor the defense and Teegan Van Gunst was a dig away from a double-double with nine.
The Jackets started the match strong with a dominate effort in set one, never giving up the lead. Georgia Tech jumped out to fast start in set two, but Gardner-Webb fought its way back from a 13-9 deficit to tie the game 19-19. A kill and a following ace from Rebecca Martin put Tech back on top and they finished out the set, 25-21.
Set three was tied 10-10, but back-to-back service aces from Wimberly Wilson sparked the Georgia Tech offense and the Jackets closed out the match with a 25-20 victory.
The Jackets are back in action tonight against host South Carolina (1-0). First serve is set for 7 p.m. and the match will air on the SEC Network+.
