ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech women’s basketball team (5-0) will travel up Route 316 to face in-state rival and seventh-ranked Georgia (7-0) on Sunday, Dec. 2. Tip-off is scheduled for 2:30 p.m. ET at Stegeman Coliseum in Athens, Ga.
The game will be televised on CSS with Matt Stewart and Robin Muller calling the game. Tech fans can also listen to the game on WREK radio (91.1FM in Atlanta/www.wrek.org), Georgia Tech women’s basketball flagship station.
“This is a great opportunity for our program,” head coach MaChelle Joseph said. “We have a tremendous amount of respect for Andy Landers and the program he built at Georgia, but we are a team on a mission. We know who we are and we know what we are about.”
Tech improved to 5-0 for the third time in the last five seasons under Joseph with its 76-57 win at Iowa on Wednesday. Chioma Nnamaka, the Atlantic Coast Conference’s leading scorer, finished with a game-high 24 points and Janie Mitchell registered her 14th career double-double to lead the Jackets.
Georgia Tech is only 2-27 all-time against the Bulldogs, but the two victories have come in the last five meetings between the rival schools. This will be the first time the two schools are undefeated going into the game since Tech and UGA where each 2-0 during the 1988-89 season, a game won by Georgia.
“We have consistently talked about defining moments on our journey to build a national power in women’s basketball,” Joseph said. “Playing UGA on Sunday in Athens is definitely an opportunity that we will embrace.”
The women’s basketball team will not be alone on its journey to Athens. Two buses full of Tech fans will be leaving from Alexander Memorial Coliseum on Sunday at 12:30 p.m.
“I would like to encourage all Georgia Tech fans, alumni, supporters and boosters to “BE BOLD, WEAR GOLD!” to the game as we chase our first-ever win in Stegman Coliseum,” added Joseph.
Tech returns home next Thursday, Dec. 6 when they host South Carolina Upstate at 7 p.m.
