ATLANTA – Senior Noah Tyler and sophomore Jose Luis Muguruza won the championships of the consolation brackets of the Georgia Tech Invitational on Sunday. Sophomore Zachary Rath, Tech’s lone competitor in the championship bracket, fell in the finals.
Tyler had a hard fought win against Atlantic Coast Conference rival Mike Gee of Clemson in the Flight B Consolation. Tyler took the first set 7-6 (5) and won match with a 7-5 victory in the second.
Muguruza also won in straight sets. The Wesley Chapel native downed Aaron Balog of Georgia Perimeter, 6-2, 7-6.
In the tournament’s championship game for Flight A, Rath fell in three sets to Jack Baker of ABAC. Rath took the first set 6-3, before dropping the next two sets, 6-1, 6-4.
In the Flight B championship, Brett Hunter of Auburn downed Tennessee’s Matt Berry in straight sets, 6-3, 7-5.
In doubles action, a pair of ACC rivals swept the semifinals to meet in the finals. Clemson duo of Ian Keeler and Clement Reix knocked off Jack Baker and Gabriel Viega of ABAC. The tandem of Stephen Rozek and Darrin Cohen from Virginia downed David Baxendino and Kiril Techerveniachki. With Keeler and Reix leading 6-5 in the finals, Rozek and Cohen of Virginia retired due to time constraints.
