Twelve Top-10 Finishes for Georgia Tech on Day One of Wake Forest Open

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. – Jerome Miller won the men’s high jump with an NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 7 feet, 2 ¼ inches to lead Georgia Tech on day one of the Wake Forest Open on Friday.

Miller, a junior from Stafford, Va., broke his personal- and school-record mark in the high jump at Wake Forest’s Kentner Stadium. Sophomore Juan Cave cleared the high jump bar at 6 feet, 8 ¾ inches for 10th place.

Junior Shantia Moss, the NCAA Indoor Champion in the 60-meter hurdles, opened her outdoor season by finishing first in the 100-meter hurdle prelims with an NCAA Regional qualifying time of 13.38. Returning from an injury, senior Fatmata Fofanah, also set an NCAA Regional qualifying time of 13.56 and crossing the line second. Sophomore Dave Ford qualified for tomorrow’s 110-meter hurdle finals with a personal-best time of 14.94 and an 11th-place finish.

Senior James Lemons, the men’s triple jump Atlantic Coast Conference Indoor Champion, placed second in the outdoor triple jump with an NCAA Regional qualifying mark of 50 feet, 7 ¼ inches. Freshman Alphonso Jordan placed fifth in the triple jump after landing at 49 feet, 1 inch.

Sophomore Steve Marcelle and junior Andy Powlen each had NCAA Regional qualifying marks in men’s shot put. Marcelle placed second with a throw of 58 feet, 7 ¼ inches, while Powlen finished fifth with a toss of 56 feet, 6 ¾ inches.

Freshman Tiffany Grant crossed the line seventh in the women’s 400-meter dash with a time of 55.22. Senior Jenny Sims placed 15th out of 108 in the women’s 800-meter dash with a time of 2:13.99. In the men’s 800m, junior Derek Hoye finished second out of 116 with a time of 1:52.01.

Senior Ashlee Kidd placed fourth in the 100-meter dash to qualify for tomorrows final with a time of 11.81.

Sophomore Katina Zuganelis finished the women’s 3,000-meter steeplechase in 10th place with a time of 11:30.60. Senior Cristan Duvall also had a 10th-place finish with a time of 9:30.29 in the men’s 3,000m SC.

The Yellow Jackets will continue to compete at the Wake Forest Open tomorrow beginning at 9:00 a.m. with the women’s hammer throw. The running events will continue at 1 p.m. with the finals of the 100-meter hurdles. Live Results are available at Flash Results.
