SPARTANBURG, S.C. — Georgia Tech led by as many as 10 with just under six minutes left, but Fletcher Magee scored 36 points including the go-ahead 3-pointer – his eighth of the game – with 1.9 seconds left as Wofford defeated Georgia Tech 63-60 on Wednesday night at Richardson Indoor Stadium.
The Yellow Jackets’ (4-4) shot a season-high 57.1 percent from the floor, including five threes in 13 attempts, but their Achilles’ heel on the night would be their 16 turnovers that led to 17 Terrier (5-4) points.
Tech was led by an impressive performance by senior Tadric Jackson, who turned in a season-high 26 points on 11-of-15 from the field. Ben Lammers also tallied double figures, recording 12 points, seven rebounds and three blocks. Freshman Jose Alvarado failed to score double digits with nine points, but grabbed six rebounds and three three-pointers — his third consecutive game with at least three three-point field goals.
Magee, a 46.5-percent shooter from three-point range in his career, hit 8-of-14 attempts from behind the arc (12-of-22 overall). Only five of the 12 second-half field goals for Wofford came from players other than Magee.
Georgia Tech withstood the first offensive push by the Terriers in the first half to take a slight 34-29 lead heading into the half, shooting a blistering 66.7 percent from the field. The Yellow Jackets were held to a slightly less 47.6 clip in the second, but 12 three-pointers from Wofford would be the difference-maker.
COACH PASTNER SAID: “I thought it was a really good basketball game. [Fletcher Magee] hit some great shots. Incredible shots. When we played good defense, it was just better offense. I thought we played well for the most part, but when you give them 17 more shot attempts, that was the big thing and we had the 16 turnovers, that really hurt us… It’s just one of those games. We played well for the most part, but we just didn’t get it done. Over this break, we have to get healthy, get reorganized and re-center everything. Find out what we need to do to get better.”
