BLACKSBURG, Va. – Junior Subbu Sivanesan captured the open section of the 400-meter dash to lead the Georgia Tech track & field team on the second and final day of the Virginia Tech Elite Invitational Saturday afternoon. In all, the Yellow Jackets recorded eight top-ten finishes on the day in various events.
On the women’s side, things got underway for the Jackets in the open section of the 400-meter dash, in which freshman Kellie Christian finished fifth overall after crossing the finish line in 56.34.
Next in the women’s distance medley relay, the team of Annie Martin, Jade Sims, Amanda Montgomery, and Mary Kate DuBard placed third with a time of 11:58.34. Next up the triple jump, sophomore Jhanelle McLeod finished fifth overall with a 41′ 6″ leap. In the shot put, sophomore Bailey Wagner posted a 48′ effort to finish eighth.
On the men’s side of the ledger, Sivansen had the first performance of note on the afternoon in the 400-meter dash, taking the event after crossing the finish line in 49.35. Teammate Jay Oatts finished eighth in the event, finishing in 51.31.
In the men’s portion of the triple jump, senior Alphonso Jordan finished off another impressive weekend after posting a mark of 52′ 6¾” to finish second of overall. The effort was good enough to earn Jordan an NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark in the event.
In the final event of note for the men on the weekend, senior Steve Marcelle, in his first action of the 2010 season, finished third overall in the shot put with a 61′ 4¼” effort. The mark was also an NCAA Provisional Qualifier for Marcelle.
Georgia Tech returns to action next weekend, when they will split amongst the Tiger Paw Invitational in Clemson, S.C. and the Tyson Invitational in Fayetteville, Ark.
