CLEMSON, S.C. – Senior Steve Marcelle and sophomore Bailey Wagner each won their portion of the shot put to lead the Georgia Tech track & field teams on the final day of the Tiger Paw Invitational on Saturday afternoon.
Things got underway on the afternoon with the men’s 5,000-meter run, as junior Nathan Tew registered the first top ten finish of the day for the Yellow Jackets after crossing the finish line in 15:13.46. Teammate Matthew Hickey finished right behind Tew in sixth with a team of 15:20.23, while Garad Soderman finished in eighth with a time of 15:22.74.
In the women’s 400-meter dash, freshman Kellie Christian finished in third place after crossing the finish line of 56.84, while in the women’s 800-meter run, three Tech athletes registered top five finishes. Leading the pack was Annie Martin, who placed third 2:16.59, while Jade Sims finished fourth in 2:17.39. Amanda Montgomery rounded out the trio with a fifth place finish in 2:18.89.
Next in the 800-meter run, freshman Shawn Roberts finished sixth overall with a time of 1:55.77, while in the women’s 200-meter dash, Taylor Davidson picked up a top-five finish for the Jackets after finishing fifth in a time of 25.34. In the men’s 3,000-meter run, freshman Douglas Black finished ninth overall in 8:46.45.
Next in the shot put, Georgia Tech made a clean sweep of the event. First on the women’s side, Wagner’s 46′ 2¼” effort was good enough for a first place finish. Next on the men’s side, Marcelle took the event with a 59′ 4¼” effort in the finals. Marcelle’s effort was also an NCAA Provisional Qualifying mark.
In the final event of note on the afternoon, Joanna Wright finished third with a mark of 11′ 10½”.
Georgia Tech returns to the track on Feb. 25th when they take part in the 2010 ACC Indoor Championships in Blacksburg, Va.
