Three Tech Golfers Qualify for U.S. Amateur

ATLANTA – Georgia Tech golfers Paul Haley, William Miller and Richard Werenski have made their way through qualifying and will be in the 312-player field for the U.S. Amateur Golf Championship, Aug. 23-29, at Chambers Bay in University Place, Washington.

Haley, a rising senior from Dallas, Texas, played in 11 events for the Yellow Jackets last year, finishing in the top 20 five times while posting a 73.71 stroke average. Miller, a rising junior from Venetia, Pa., played in two events, while Werenski is an incoming freshman from South Hadley, Mass.

Haley tied for first at his qualifier at the Golf Club of Dallas, Texas, while Miller won outright the qualifier at the Indiana Country Club in Indiana, Pa. Werenski finished third at Crestview Country Club in Agawam, Mass.

The 312 players will play 36 holes of stroke play Aug. 23-24, and the top 64 finishers will be seeded for match play beginning Aug. 25.

Two Tech alumni have won the U.S. Amateur, Matt Kuchar most recently in 1997 in Lemont, Ill., following his freshman year. The legendary Bobby Jones won the event five times (1924, 1925, 1927, 1928 and 1930).
