GEORGIA TECH’S SCHNUGG ADVANCES IN SINGLES AND DOUBLES AT ITA REGIONAL
CHAPEL HILL, N.C. – Georgia Tech senior men’s tennis player Scott Schnugg turned in an outstanding day, advancing in both singles and doubles competition at the ITA Region II Championship in Chapel Hill, N.C. The regional is being held at the Cone-Kenfield Tennis Center on the campus of the University of North Carolina.
Schnugg, the fifth-seeded player in the tournament, opened the day in singles competition of the main draw against Virginia’s Marko Miklo and earned a hard-fought three-set victory. Schnugg dropped the first set by a 7-5 score, but rallied to win the second by a 6-1 count and the third by 7-5 score. In the second round, he disposed of Florida State’s Chip Webb in straight sets by scores of 6-1 and 6-2. He will now face 12th-seeded Marcus Westman of South Carolina in the round of 16 on Saturday morning.
In doubles action, Schnugg again teamed with sophomore Marko Rajevac to advance to the semifinals of the main draw. The duo, which is seeded eighth in the tournament, defeated Virginia’s Nick Methayler and Rylan Rizza by an 8-4 score.
Another Yellow Jacket to advance in the main singles draw was rookie Jose Luis Muguruza, who also reached the round of 16 with a pair of wins on Friday. Muguruza did not drop a set on the day, defeating East Tennessee State’s Alejandro Salazar in the first round by scores of 7-5 and 6-4. In the next round, he defeated seventh-seeded John Chesworth of Furman by matching scores of 6-4 and 6-4. Muguruza will square off with Duke’s Peter Rodrigues on Saturday morning.
The ITA Region II Championship will continue on Saturday and Sunday with singles and doubles competition, with the finalists of the singles draw and the doubles champion advancing to the National Indoor Championship. Full tournament results are available at www.tennisinformation.com
