DURHAM, N.C. – The 21st-ranked Georgia Tech women’s tennis team dropped a 5-2 decision to seventh-ranked Duke at the Ambler Tennis Stadium in Durham, N.C., on Saturday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets fall to 11-5, 1-2 ACC, while the Blue Devils improve to 12-3 overall, 2-0 ACC.
Duke swept doubles play to jump out to an early 1-0 lead. In No. 1 doubles, Duke’s Kelly McCain and Hillary Adams defeated 41st-ranked Georgia Tech’s Mysti Morris and Sekita Grant 8-6, the No. 2 doubles team of Julie DeRoo and Amanda Johnson beat Jaimie Wong and Mason Miller 8-5, and Katie Granson and Susie Abromeit served up an 8-1 win against Fallon Koon and Laura Ozolins in No. 3 doubles.
In singles action, Duke’s forth-ranked Kelly McCain defeated Georgia Tech’s Mysti Morris in straight sets 6-3, 6-1 at No. 1 singles. In the longest match of the day, Duke’s Amanda Johnson outlasted Jaimie Wong to take the No. 2 match 3-6, 6-0, 7-5. The No. 3 match gave Georgia Tech one of its two wins of the day, with Catherine Gunn beating Duke’s Julie DeRoo 6-2, 1-6, 6-2. The victory upped Gunn’s dual-match singles record to an outstanding 14-1. The Jackets picked up their second win of the day at No. 6, as Sekita Grant defeated the Blue Devils’ Katie Granson in straight sets by a 6-3, 6-2 count.
The No. 4 and No. 5 matchups were both straight-set wins for Duke, with Ioana Plesu defeating Mason Miller 6-1, 6-0 and Saras Arasu beating Laura Ozolins 6-1, 6-2.
The Jackets will be back in action tomorrow, when they travel down the road to face eighth-ranked North Carolina at 1 p.m.
