CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – The Georgia Tech women’s basketball team will look to build on the success of its win over NC State last Thursday when it travels to Charlottesville, Va., to face Virginia in a key Atlantic Coast Conference match-up. The game will be televised on the ACC’s regional network, which includes Fox Sports Net South.
The Yellow Jackets (14-8, 7-5 ACC) snapped a two-game slide with their win over the Wolfpack on Thursday, while the Cavaliers (12-10, 5-6, ACC) will look to bounce back from a loss at the hands of Clemson on Thursday night. Tech’s win over NC State ended a three-game winless string for the Jackets in the series with State and earned a split of the season series.
As has been the case for much of the year, the Yellow Jackets have found a new hero to lead them in each outing and against the Wolfpack, that person was senior guard Milli Martinez, who took over in the second half leading Tech to the win.
The Imlay City, Mich., native scored seven of her game-high 16 points over the final 5:07 against the Wolfpack to key a 16-3 Tech run to close out the game. Included in that stretch was a 5-for-7 performance at the free throw line.
Martinez has now scored in double figures in 13 games and recorded her second double-double of the year with 10 boards against NC State, to move into seventh among the ACC’s rebound leaders with 6.8 boards per game.
Junior Sonja Mallory added her eighth-straight double-figure scoring game as she matched Martinez with 16 points against State.
Tech dominated the boards once again against the Wolfpack, claiming a 46-27 advantage in rebounding. The Jackets +10.1 rebounding margin on the year rates first in the ACC and is sixth nationally.
The Yellow Jackets will be looking for their fourth-straight win against the Cavaliers and second-straight victory in Charlottesville after picking up their first-ever road win against Virginia a year ago.
