ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech women’s basketball team will put its school-record 10-game win streak on the line Thursday night when it hosts 11th-ranked North Carolina in the ACC opener for both teams that will tip off at 7 p.m. at Alexander Memorial Coliseum.
The Yellow Jackets are off to the best start in school history with their 11-1 record and school-best 10-game win streak. The 11 wins to open the season topped the previous best of 10-1 held by the 1991 squad. The meeting with the Tar Heels (10-1) will be the 50th all time between the two schools, with UNC leading the series by a 38-11 count.
Earlier this week, the Jackets captured the Atlanta Marriott NW Invitational title with wins over St. John’s and East Carolina, getting key contributions from a number of players, including junior guard Megan Isom, who earned MVP honors in the tournament.
Isom scored 30 points in the two games, including 23 in the championship game to go along with five steals against the Pirates. She also had nine rebounds against St. Johns to key a Tech rebounding effort the recorded a 57-29 advantage on the boards.
Isom’s back court mate Alex Stewart joined her on the all-tournament team, as she was stellar in both games, leading all scorers with a career-high 17 points against St. John’s and netting 10 points against ECU. Stewart was perfect at the free throw line in the two games hitting on all 16 attemps at the line. She has now made 20-straight free throws.
Two other Yellow Jackets, senior center Sonja Mallory and junior forward Fallon Stokes were also named to the all-tournament team. Mallory had a double-double against St. John’s and netted 19 points against the Pirates. Stokes finished the East Carolina game with 18 points and seven rebounds.
