Tech Women Stand Fifth, Men Sixth After Day One of ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships

April 19, 2002

CHARLOTTESVILLE, Va. – Paced by school record and All-ACC performances by seniors Chris Sinotte and Mishanta Reyes, the Georgia Tech men and women’s track and field squads stand sixth and fifth, respectively, after day one of the 2002 ACC Outdoor Track and Field Championships at the University of Virginia’s Lannigan Field. The men have 17 points to rank sixth, while the women have 34 points in fifth.

The host Cavaliers lead the women’s side of the meet with 51 points, while Florida State ranks first in the men’s competition with 48 points.

Sinotte eclipsed his own school record with a toss of 230’08.00″ in the javelin, which was good for a second-place finish and all-conference accolades.

Reyes leaped a wind-aided 6.33 meters (20’09.25″) to finish third in the long jump, also good for All-ACC honors. She also jumped an allowable 6.26 meters on another effort, which topped her own school record set a year ago and met the NCAA provisional qualifying standard.

The lone other Yellow Jacket to earn all-conference honors Friday was junior Katie Griffin, who placed third in the 10,000 meters with a time of 35:18.97.

The women also got NCAA provisional times from sophomore Renee Metivier, who placed fourth in the 3000-meter steeplechase in a time of 10:12.85, and sophomore Amandi Rhett, who placed third in the prelims of the 100 meters in a time of 11.48.

Other strong finishes on the men’s side came from sophomore Kyle Rabbitt (seventh) and senior Phillip Gable (eighth) in the 10,000 meters and junior Brian Fraser (seventh) in the long jump.

The women also got strong showings from junior Jessica DeFreitas, who was fourth in the long jump, senior Angela Levens, who was sixth in the hammer throw, and a trio in the javelin led by freshman Lauren Reimer, who was fifth. Maja Pachale placed sixth, while Dana Hall was seventh in the same event.

The majority of Friday’s competition consisted of qualifying rounds for Saturday’s finals. On the men’s side, sophomore Brendon Mahoney advanced in both the 800 and 1500 meters, while senior Joe Stegall also moves on in the 1500. The Jackets will have a pair of finalists in both the 400 meters and 400-meter hurdles. Juniors Bryan Swarn and Sharif Azim qualified in the 400, while seniors Olivier Deigni and Aaron Sink advance in the hurdles.

Women moving on include Rhett, who advances in the 100 and 200 meters, DeFreitas in the 100, freshman Shanta Smith in the 400 and sophomore Courtney Thomas in the 400-meter hurdles. Seniors Nicole Campbell and Sara Pardue will move on the 800 and 1500 meters, while senior Alisha McClinton leads a group of three in the 100-meter hurdles.

The meet resumes Saturday at 9:30 a.m. with the men’s hammer throw. Running events begin at 1 p.m. and conclude at 4:40 p.m. with the men’s 4×400-meter relay.
