ATLANTA – Rookie Jacqua Williams scored a career-high 20 points and led five Yellow Jackets in double figures as Georgia Tech (8-1) defeated Longwood (3-8), 81-41, Tuesday night at Alexander Memorial Coliseum.
The Jackets outscored the Lancers, 50-17 in the first half, and cruised to the 40-point victory by recording their highest scoring output since falling at Maryland, 91-87, on January 15, 2004.
Junior Stephanie Higgs recorded the first double-double of her career with a 12-point, 10-rebound performance, while Janie Mitchell fell just one rebound short of her fourth double-double, scoring 16 points and nine rebounds in 26 minutes of play.
Williams, who played a season-high 23 minutes, also had six steals on the night and was 7-for-9 from the field. Chioma Nnamaka went 5-for-6 from the floor, including 2-for-3 from beyond the three-point arc, while scoring 14 points and recording four steals on the night, and Kasha Terry rounded out the Jackets in double-figures by scoring 10.
Tech shot over 45 percent from the floor, while holding the Lancers to just 22.8 percent, and converted on 91.7 percent from the charity stripe.
Williams set a new career high for points in the first half, scoring 11 points on 4-of-6 from the field while recording five steals in 12 minutes of play. Overall in the frame, the Yellow Jackets scored 20 points off 13 Lancer turnovers while giving up the ball just three times. Mitchell joined Williams in double-figures with 10 points, while Higgs led the Jackets with seven rebounds in the half. Tech carried a 50-17 lead into the locker room after ending the frame on a 13-2 run.
The Yellow Jackets will host Troy University Thursday at 12 noon in Tech’s final game before breaking for the Christmas holiday.
