Tech Track Finishes Day Two Of ACC Championship

BOSTON, Mass. – After two days of competition at the Atlantic Coast Conference Track and Field Championships, the Georgia Tech women’s team sits in 10th place while the men’s team sits in 11th with one more day of competition to go at the Reggie Lewis Center.

North Carolina leads the women with 35 points while Virginia Tech is the leader amongst the men already tallying 40.50 points.

Day two saw all of the preliminary rounds of competition, along with the long jump, high jump, women’s pole vault and 5,000 meter run.

Omar Morrison finished in eighth place for the Jackets in the men’s long jump with a leap of 7.10m (23-3.50) while both Jasmine Kent and Julienne McKee placed for the Tech women. Kent took home fifth place tallying four points with a leap of 5.97m (19-7) while McKee rounded out the scorers with an eighth place leap of 5.83m (19-1.5).

Mykhail Chambers tallied a point for Tech in the high jump with his eighth place leap of 1.99m (6-6.25). Freshman Brandon Mbaba also netted the same height, but finished in 11th.

Five different Jackets competed in the 5,000m run with D.J.McMillan leading the pack with a time of 14:34.64.

In the preliminary races, Shawn Roberts highlighted the Tech competitors, earning the 800m run preliminary race with a time of 1:50.27. Joining him in the finals is Rick Scheff who placed sixth in the prelims with a time of 1:51.59.

Also earning a spot in the finals for the Tech men is Jeremy Greenwald who finished 10th in the mile run with a time of 4:08.37 and Perron Jones, who qualified for the 200m finals in 21.72 seconds, narrowly missing out on a spot in the 60m finals.

On the women’s side, newcomer Stephanie Kalu took home a fifth place preliminary performance in the 60m dash while both Leslie Njoku and Melanie Akwule found themselves in the 60m Hurdles finals. Njoku took seventh with a time of 8.42 while Akwule was just behind her in eighth with a time of 8.43 seconds.

Tech will finish out its time at the ACC Championships Saturday.
