Tech Topped by No. 13 Virginia Tech

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech softball (15-12, 2-4 ACC) dropped to No. 13 Virginia Tech (22-5, 8-1 ACC) by a final of 5-1 on Sunday at Mewborn Field.

Sophomore right fielder Madison Dobbins highlighted the day with her first career dinger, while senior hurler Blake Neleman became the second Yellow Jacket ever to surpass 500 career strikeouts.

Virginia Tech delivered its first blow of the day with a two-run shot in the top of the second. The Hokies followed with a pair of solo home runs in the top of the fourth, but Dobbins fired back with one of her own in the bottom half to trim the lead to 4-1. A sacrifice fly in the top of the sixth gave Virginia Tech its final run, and the Jacket bats failed to make any noise for the remainder of the contest, resulting in a 5-1 Hokie win.

Despite moving to 501 career punchouts with three on the day, Neleman (4-5) received the loss, giving up three earned runs in three innings of work. Fellow right handers Sophia Voyles and Chandler Dennis also spent time in the circle as Voyles tossed three innings, allowing two earned runs with a pair of sit downs, while Dennis pitched one final, hitless inning.
