THE FLATS – Seth Reeves shot a 1-over-par 73 to pace Georgia Tech, which improved its score by 13 strokes Saturday and moved into a tie for 12th place after 36 holes at the Southern Highlands Collegiate Masters.
With milder winds prevailing on Saturday at the 7,510-yard, par 72 Southern Highlands Golf Club, third-ranked Tech turned in a 14-over-par 302 and is in a tie with No. 21 New Mexico at 617 (41-over-par). Bo Andrews shot 75, Ollie Schniederjans posted a 76, and Richard Werenski and Anders Albertson each carded 78s.
Host UNLV, ranked 37th in the nation, shot 15-over-par 303 Saturday, 14 strokes higher than Friday’s round, but the Rebels maintained their lead with a 16-over-par total of 592, two shots clear of 10th-ranked Stanford (592), whose 9-over-par 297 was the day’s best team score. No. 19 UCLA and No. 1 Alabama are tied for third place at 598, followed by No. 2 Oklahoma State at 601. The 15-team field includes the nation’s top five teams and 11 of the nation’s top 25.
Patrick Rodgers of Stanford, with a 3-under-par 69 Saturday, took the 36-hole lead at 143 (-1), two shots ahead of UCLA’s Jonathan Garrick (145, +1). Alabama’s Robby Shelton is third at 146 (+2). Stanford and Alabama each have two players in the top 10 individually.
Reeves, a senior from Duluth, Ga., is Tech’s top player through 36 holes, tied for 24th place with a tournament score of 151 (+7). Schniederjans is tied for 27th at 152 (+8). Werenski is tied for 40th place at 155.
The final round begins at 11 a.m. Eastern time Sunday.
