ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team will host Wofford and Georgia Southern in a doubleheader this Sunday, February 6, at the Bill Moore Tennis Center. The Jackets will open the day at 9 a.m. against the Terriers, followed by a match with the Eagles scheduled to begin at 3 p.m.
Georgia Tech enters the doubleheader 1-0 after defeating Princeton 7-0 in their season opener. The Jackets claimed all six singles matches and won the doubles point winning two of three matches.
“It is nice to get a doubleheader in,” head coach Kenny Thorne commented. “We get an opportunity to play everybody. We have a deep team this year, so we need to make sure everyone gets some playing time.”
No. 25 sophomore Jose Luis Muguruza, who is 1-0 in Tech’s dual meet this year and is 4-0 in 2005 season, leads the Jackets.
Joining Muguruza are freshman David North and Jordan Delass. North is 6-2 in his last eight matches, going 4-0 in singles and 2-2 in doubles action, while Delass is 4-0 on the year after missing much of the fall with an injury.
Junior Marko Rajevac, sophomore Zachary Rath and freshman Sukhwa Young all posted wins in Tech’s opener.
“We are focusing on us in the beginning of the year and going out onto the court and playing the right way every time,” added Thorne. “We set some pretty high goals this season. We have to go out and play hard each and every match to achieve those goals.”
The match against Wofford will be the first meeting between the two schools, while the Jackets and Eagles have squared off 23 times. Tech holds a 14-9 edge over Southern winning the last meeting 7-0 in Tech’s season opener in 2004.
