Tech Sweeps Charlotte on Senior Weekend

THE FLATS – Georgia Tech softball (36-12, 11-10 ACC) completed a series sweep over Charlotte (26-20, 7-11 C-USA) with a 7-4 victory on Sunday at Mewborn Field. A five-run rally in the fourth propelled the Yellow Jackets to the eventual sweep as the White and Gold tallied 11 hits on the day.

Senior left fielder Kennedy Cowden led the Jackets at the dish, knocking her second dinger of the season as she went 2-for-3 with a pair of RBI and runs scored. Sophomore shortstop Jin Sileo also put up a 2-for-3 line with a pair of runs scored as well as a double while serving as a vacuum in the middle defensively, making a handful of highlight-reel plays.

In the circle, junior hurler Chandler Dennis picked up her team-leading 16th win of the season as she allowed just one earned run on four hits while punching out four batters through 5 1/3 innings of work. Senior right hander Palmer Pinholster got the start, tossing 1 2/3 innings.

Mirroring the first two games of the series, Charlotte took the early lead with a two-RBI double in the opening frame. The 49ers added another run in the top of the fourth, driving it in on a double to slip ahead 3-0, but the Yellow Jackets clapped back with five runs in the bottom half.

Junior catcher Emma Kauf led things off with a double, followed by a single from sophomore designated player Sara Beth Allen to put runners on the corners. Kauf scored Tech’s first run of the day on an errant throw to the plate before back-to-back RBI singles by senior second baseman Bailee Zeitler and Sileo knotted the game at 3 apiece. Cowden put an exclamation point on the inning with a following two-run bomb, moving the Jackets ahead, 5-3.

Tech added a pair of security runs in the bottom of the sixth as Sileo doubled and Cowden singled, setting up a two-RBI double for senior pinch hitter Ariella Jackson. The 49ers battled back in the top of the seventh, cutting into Tech’s lead with an RBI double, but Dennis would close things out to seal a 7-4 triumph and series sweep for the Yellow Jackets.
