GREENSBORO, N.C. – Coming off its first-ever Atlantic Coast Conference title, the Georgia Tech softball team was picked by the league’s five head coaches to finish second this season behind 2002 Women’s College World Series participant Florida State.
The Jackets, who went 6-2 in the league and 52-18 overall a year ago, tallied one first-place vote and 18 total points to finish behind the Seminoles, who garnered the remaining four first-place votes and 24 overall points.
North Carolina, who Tech defeated in the conference title game in 2002, was picked for third with 14 points, followed by Virginia (nine points) and Maryland (eight points).
Tech enjoyed its finest ever season a year ago, ranking 17th in the final NFCA Top 25 Poll and coming within a single victory of a trip to the WCWS.
The Jackets, who return 12 letterwinners from last year’s team, open the 2003 season February 8 at South Carolina’s Gamecock Invitational. Tech will face Boston College, UNC Greensboro and the host Gamecocks at this event.
