Tech Men's Tennis Wraps Up Fall Schedule This Weekend

Nov. 5, 2008

ATLANTA – The Georgia Tech men’s tennis team will wrap up its fall schedule this weekend as sophomore Guillermo Gomez will travel to Charlottesville, Va. for the 2008 ITA National Indoor Championships while seven Yellow Jackets will compete at the Bulldog Scramble in Athens, Ga.

“Guillermo will face the best competition there is in collegiate tennis at the national indoors,” head coach Kenny Thorne said. “He has played great tennis all fall and he deserves to be there, so we know he will do well.”

Gomez, ranked No. 33 in the nation, will compete in the 32-player singles field that pits some of the country’s best players against each other. The Alicante, Spain native earned a bid to the national tournament by winning the consolation bracket at the D’Novo/ITA All-American Championships in October. Play begins at 10 a.m. on Thursday.

Seven other players will represent the Jackets at the Bulldog Scramble hosted by Georgia Friday through Sunday at the Dan Magill Tennis Complex in Athens, Ga. In addition to Tech, the five-team tournament includes Southeastern Conference foes Georgia, Kentucky, Ole Miss and South Carolina.

Play will begin each day at 9 a.m. with a round of doubles followed by singles action. Doug Kenny, Kevin King, Dusan Miljevic, Miguel Muguruza, Eliot Potvin, Austin Roebuck and Ryan Smith will all compete in the Scramble.

“The Bulldog Scramble is a good opportunity for us to play against some of the best the SEC has to offer,” Thorne added. “It will provide a chance for our players to set themselves apart and see where they are at individually before heading into team competition in January.”
