ATLANTA – A trio of Georgia Tech men’s tennis players, including Joao Menano, Fabio Campos and Scott Schnugg, all advanced to the round of 16 on the first day of competition at the ACC Indoor Championships at the Wake Forest Indoor Tennis Center in Winston-Salem, N.C.
Menano, who is the defending singles champion in the event, advanced to the second round when North Carolina’s Brad Pomeroy withdrew from the event with an illness. He then defeated Wake Forest’s Andrew Simpson in straight sets by a 6-2, 6-2 score. Menano will now face Doug Stewart of Virginia on Saturday at 11 a.m.
Fabio Campos also had the benefit of a withdrawal in the first round, when UNC’s Geoff Boyd pulled out with an illness. Campos then used three sets to defeat Virginia’s Nick Meythaler, dropping the first set by a 6-3 score, before winning the next two sets by scores of 6-3 and 6-4.
Schnugg needed only four sets to win his two matches on the first day of play, as he opened the tournament with a 6-4, 7-5 win over Florida State’s Hagen Endler. He followed that performance with another straight-set decision over Travis Triplett of Virginia. Schnugg won the first set in a tiebreaker by a 7-6 (3) score and then captured the second set by a 6-4 count.
In doubles action, pair of Tech teams won their opening matches, but were unable to advance past the first round. The Jackets’ tandem of Menano and Marko Rajevac defeated Meythaler and Noen of Viginia by an 8-6 score, but then withdrew from the event with an injury. Tech’s team of Schugg and West Nott downed North Carolina’s Jonathan Janda and Andy Metzler by an 8-6 count, but then fell to third-seeded Matt Cloer and Rodrigo Laub of Florida State by a 9-7 score.
The ACC Indoor Championships will continue on Saturday with both singles and doubles competition. Full tournament results are available at www.tennisinformation.com.
