Tech Men's 4x400 Relay Team Provisionally Qualifies at Pepsi Invitational

ATLANTA (Jan. 22) – Georgia Tech’s men’s 4×400 relay team placed second at the Pepsi Indoor Invitational and ran a time of 3:11.07 to hit the Yellow Jacket’s first NCAA Indoor Championship provisional time of the year Saturday at Rector Field House in Blacksburg, Va.

The Yellow Jackets ended the invitational, which was hosted by Virginia Tech, with four second-place finishes and five third-place finishes.

Tech’s 4×400 team, which returns senior Michael Johnson (Littleton, Colo.), junior Tosin Tomori (Harare, Zimbabwe) and sophomore Bryan Swarn (Englewood, Colo.) from last year’s fifth place NCAA Outdoor Championship squad, did not qualify for the NCAA indoor meet a year ago. Freshman Sharif Azim (Marietta, Ga.) is the newcomer to this year’s squad.

Swarn placed second in the 400 meters in an indoor career-best time of 47.32 seconds. Freshman Brendon Mahoney (Cumming, Ga.) was second in the 800 meters in a time of 1:51.05, while the distance medley relay team was second in 10:00.77.

Senior Judy Johnson (Snellville, Ga.) was third in the 5,000 meters in a time of 17:31.03, while junior Sara Pardue (Aurora, Colo.) continued her strong indoor season with a third in the 800 meters in 2:10.72. Senior Ayana Grant (Oakland, Calif.) was third in the 60 meter hurdles in 8.48 seconds, while freshman Keith Schuler (Florence, Ky.) was third in the high jump with a leap of 6-9.75. Senior Malcolm Leason (Wilmington, Del.) was third in the triple jump with his first jump of the year over 50 feet at 50-8.

Tech returns to action January 29 at the IKON Invitational in Johnson City, Tenn.
