Tech Halfway Through Spring Drills

April 9, 2002

With Georgia Tech’s spring practice halfway over, the Yellow Jackets’ quarterback competition has been reduced by one as junior Andy Hall (Cheraw, S.C.) has quit the team and is expected to transfer following the spring semester.

Andy Hall has decided not to play here anymore,” said Tech head coach Chan Gailey following Tuesday’s workout at Rose Bowl Field. “He didn’t tell me his plans for the future. We wish him the best. I’m sorry he didn’t finish the competition here. I had hoped he would have done that, but everybody has their own idea about what’s right for them.

“The statement he made to me was something to the effect that, ‘I just don’t feel like things are going my way.'”

The starting job now appears to be a competition between junior transfer A.J. Suggs (Powder Springs, Ga.) and redshirt freshman Damarius Bilbo (Moss Point, Miss.) with junior Brian Camp (Dublin, Ohio) also competing for playing time.

Hall had served as Tech’s backup quarterback behind George Godsey the last two years. He played in a total of 10 games the last two seasons, including Tech’s Seattle Bowl victory over 11th-ranked Stanford. In 2001, he completed 15 of 27 passes for 262 yards with one touchdown and two interceptions while rushing nine times for 46 yards.

Gailey added that he didn’t expect to move redshirt freshman Dawan Landry (Ama, La.) back to quarterback. Landry began the spring at quarterback but moved to safety.

“We’ll go to work now with the three guys that are left out there,” said Gailey.

After ending practice on a long completion from Bilbo to sophomore Levon Thomas (College Park, Ga.) during a team drill, Gailey said that there were quite a few positives in Tuesday’s workout.

“That was a big play, and you’ve got to have big plays to win games,” said Gailey.

Tech continues spring practice this week with workouts scheduled for Wednesday (4 p.m.), Friday (4 p.m.) and Saturday (1 p.m. scrimmage).

The Tech football staff will hold its annual coaching clinic Friday and Saturday. Interested coaches should contact Butch Brooks at 404-385-0404.
