Stillwater, Okla. — The Georgia Tech golf team improved its team score over the final round of play, but was unable to make a significant move in the team standings, finishing in a tie for 11th at the Ping/Golfweek Preview in Stillwater, Okla. The 54-hole tournament was contested at the par-72, 7,290-yard Karsten Creek Golf Club, which will also serve as the host of the 2003 NCAA Championships.
The Yellow Jackets finished the final round with a team score of 302, to complete play in the tournament with a 54-hole total of 307-307-302-916. That score put Tech in a tie for 11th with Florida (305-296-315-916) and well off the final total of 16-over-par, 300-291-289-880 of team champion Augusta State.
Georgia Tech’s top individual finisher in the field was senior Troy Matteson, who tied with two other players in 10th place. Matteson’s score of 73-76-72-221 gave him his second top-10 finish in as many starts. He was eight shots off the pace of Augusta State’s Emmett Turner, who captured medalist honors with a 54-hole score of 3-under-par, 74-69-70-213. Turner was the only individual in the field to finish under par.
Matteson was followed in the individual standings by sophomore Nicholas Thompson, who carded a final-round score of 73 to finished tied with five other players in 32nd place at 77-78-73-228. Fellow sophomore Chan Wongluekiet was the next individual in the field, tying for 53rd place at 78-79-78-235, while senior Adam Cranford was among three players in 59th place at 79-81-79-239. Rounding out the Yellow Jacket contingent in the field was freshman Thomas Jordan, who completed his collegiate debut tied for 62nd place at 77-77-87-241.
The Yellow Jackets will next be in action on October 14-15, when they travel to Birmingham, Ala., to compete in the Jerry Pate Intercollegiate at the Old Overton Golf Club.
